The thermostat regulates the temperature of your coolant. At a predetermined temperature the thermostat will open to let coolant flow to the radiator and be cooled by airflow or the fan. Over time the thermostat will become stuck open or closed, leading to a variety of issues. A closed thermostat will never allow the coolant to reach the radiator and be cooled. Hot coolant will continue to circulate through the engine and absorb even more heat until boiling and the system overheats. An open thermostat is not as bad but is still not ideal - the coolant is always cool, with the temp needle always reading in the cool range. This tells the ECU to richen the fuel mixture to bring the car up to normal operating temp. So your fuel mileage decreases and the car runs rich.
Replacing the thermostat is an easy but messy job. This thermostat includes the main o-ring (but a housing gasket may be required). Consider replacing the housing and any associated temp sensors while you're in there. The cooling system will need to be bled after.

Ensure the longevity and safety of your vehicle's engine by replacing aging plastic and rubber cooling system components. Over time, these parts become weak points, risking engine safety with each mile driven. Dry-rot, splitting, or breaks in cooling hoses can result in antifreeze loss, leading to potential engine overheating. To prevent damage to delicate aluminum engine components, it's recommended to replace engine cooling hoses every 100,000 miles.
Thankfully, URO Parts offers a cost-effective solution to safeguard your engine from potential failure. These high-quality components ensure safe and smooth operation, free of coolant loss or overheating.
If you're overhauling your BMW's cooling system, replacing this critical lower hose is essential.
URO Parts provides over 8,000 high-quality spare parts, many designed to replace factory BMW components. Their commitment to precision, materials, and workmanship ensures each part meets the highest standards. With a focus on durability, function, and affordability, URO Parts delivers quality replacement components you can trust.

Just like the rest of your vehicle's major systems, the cooling system must also be addressed periodically to ensure proper cooling and component reliability. Plastic and rubber components become brittle and prone to splitting or cracking after long periods of heating and cooling cycles, especially in colder climates! The coolant itself can degrade or become contaminated, leading to potential corrosion or freezing issues. Finally, thermostats and sensors can fail completely, preventing proper cooling and/or coolant temperature readings to become inaccurate.
To make sure you are not left stranded on the side of the road with an overheated engine, we have put together this Basic Cooling System Service kit. This kit contains all of the most-likely-to-fail components, giving you peace of mind knowing your engine will continue to run cool for another 60,000+ miles.
See kit contents below for all included components.

Engine running a little hot or is the temp gauge not telling you anything? The thermostat might be the likely problem. Many cooling issues start with the thermostat. This is electronically controlled by the engine computer based on the cooling demands from the engine. And cooling components are working harder than ever. Engine performance is also dependent on temperature - as temperatures rise and pass a certain threshold the engine computer will begin reducing power. Stay on top of your cooling maintenance by replacing critical components preventatively. This replacement thermostat fits many of the N51 N52 N53 N54 6 cylinder engines and is an OEM Behr part.
The thermostat is located along with the water pump on the side of the engine. To gain access for removal you may need to remove the water pump as well. If the water pump is removed you MUST replace its mounting bolts. You can add them from the options below. We also have a bundled package that includes the water pump, mounting screws, connecting hose, and clamps if you want to replace everything together (recommended).

The perfect upgrade for your connection between your thermostat and cylinder head. Designed using durable silicone and billet aluminum to greatly outlast the OE rubber and plastic combination.
Some of the weakest point of the cooling systems in BMW's can come down to the OE plastic fittings breaking down from the constant changes in temperature softening these plastic components. When this happens even simply moving the hose slightly could cause the fitting to crack causing the coolant to leak all over. The ECS design silicone hose with billet aluminum adapter retains OE fitment with superior strength to not only handle the performance, but stand up to the wear and tear of a daily driver.
Features:
Manufactured from billet 6061-T6 with type III anodize for exceptional durability and corrosion resistance.
Much stronger part than OEM plastic
Will not become brittle and fatigue over time due thermal cycling. This will prevent the part from breaking during removal and re-installation.
