BMW has a seemingly endless number of fans of the N54/N55/S55 engines, three straight-six turbo engines that are each capable of 750+ horsepower, but that doesn't mean they were without their faults! BMW's N54 had a notoriously rocky start with reliability due to multiple issues such as fuel injectors failing, turbos failing, serpentine belt failure, crank hubs coming loose, and more... BMW made multiple attempts to fix the issues plaguing the N54, but they could only do so much and the fixes rolled out seemed temporary at best. Following the N54, BMW released their updated N55 and S55 engines, giving many people hope that these engines would address the previous issues. Unfortunately, this was only some-what the case. Crank hubs and crank bolts continued to loosen over time and serpentine belts continued to shred themselves and get pulled into the oil pan through the front main seal. For all three engines, this meant a single failure could effectively turn your engine into an oversized paperweight. Luckily for us, the BMW community is full of skilled enthusiasts who have gladly taken up the task to offer solutions! The first headache to be addressed was the Crank Hub and Bolt. Using a simple plate that fits perfectly over your crank hub's hex-head bolt and mounts up against the damper, the crank bolt is effectively locked in place, preventing it from being able to back out until the plate is fully removed. Next up was the serpentine belt failures. It's not known what exactly causes the serpentine belt to split, but once it does, the pieces hanging off of the belt wrap around and behind the damper. This leads to the belt breaking up into smaller pieces and eventually getting pushed between the crank hub and rear main seal into the oil pan. These small pieces of debris get caught in and block the oil pickup, preventing oil flow and leading to engine failure. To prevent this, multiple aftermarket companies came up with their own versions of Crank Seal Plates. This plate is installed behind the front damper, blocking the opening that allows the serpentine belt to pass between the crank hub and seal, keeping debris out of your oil pan! Also included in this kit are the components to service your front Oil Cooler/Filter Housing gaskets, refresh your drive belt system, and install the aftermarket upgrades. This is the direct replacement wheel bearing and hub assembly to fit the front of the E60 M5, E63 M6, E82 1M, and E90/E92 M3. We sell the OE BMW or OEM F.A.G. bearing so you get the highest quality part available. This is the hub with the bearing and it bolts to the carrier (new hardware is recommended, see below).

Replace your wheel bearings when you hear groaning or rumbling sounds from the front. These sounds increase in frequency as speed increases and will get louder as you turn the wheel (and put load on the worn side). Failing wheel bearings can also attribute to annoying 'pad knockback' on the track.

The water pump on the N54 engine has more cooling responsibilities than ever before. Not only must it provide cooling for the engine, but it's also pumping fluid used to cool the turbocharger oil and automatic transmission oil. The good news is that the pump only works when, and only as much, as it needs to. The engine computer dictates how much fluid needs to be pumped through the system depending on the load. That means the system can actually stop the pump when warmer temperatures are needed. No longer is the pump spinning all the time from an engine-driven belt. The bad news is that it's now an electrical part, so a failure is usually immediate and with no warning. And if the electronics are at fault, there is no way to rebuild or repair it. Fortunately, the engine computer will force a shut down or reduce power if a problem occurs, preventing catastrophic engine damage.

How to avoid a water pump failure in the future? Replacing the water pump as part of a regular interval schedule will ensure you always have a functioning pump in place. Since this technology is relatively new for BMW, therefore the lifecycle of the pump isn't yet known, we have been recommending replacement every 80-100k miles. This package of OE/OEM parts covers everything with Original BMW coolant offered to finish off the job. A proper bleeding procedure must be followed with the new electric pump.

This arm controls the toe alignment in the M3 rear suspension. When these bushings wear out the tire loses toe control and the tire has too much lateral in/out movement. This can make the handling feel very nervous and imprecise and like the rear end is steering itself.

The N54 in your BMW is an interference engine, meaning that if the timing chain were to fail your engine would suffer catastrophic damage due to valvetrain components colliding with each other. Over time the timing chain will start to wear and stretch, potentially causing it to skip timing or just completely fail. Also, the timing tensioners themselves could fail! This cooling overhaul will cover just about everything you could replace on the 328's cooling system. We start with the basic water pump and thermostat bundle. These are already vital to the health and durability of the N52 328i. But to properly maintain these cars for the long term, the rest of the cooling system must be refreshed and preventatively replaced. Here you can add a radiator, expansion tank, cooling hoses, and the BMW antifreeze. This package fits 328i/328xi with N52 engine and manual transmission.

The sophisticated electronics of the ECU and water pump means catastrophic overheating should be a thing of the past. But the downside is that the electronics can shut down without any warning or symptoms. And troubleshooting is equally frustrating since the water pump electronics are not readable or serviceable. There are several clues to a faulty thermostat or water pump - the fan runs at full speed all the time (even immediately on a cold start), pending (soft) fault code for low coolant flow, or the water pump can be heard running constantly. But when the pump fails it's an immediate shut down of the engine which can be a major inconvenience and lead to additional repairs that might have been avoided with preventative maintance. We recommend a full cooling system overhaul on the E90/E92 every 80-90,000 miles and to check for soft/pending codes at every 5,000 mile service .

Cooling Hoses

With regular driving the hoses should last a very long time. Even the plastic connectors seem to be holding up well. But as a preventative measure new hoses are recommended. We have also seen issues with re-using hoses as the spring connectors get weak over time and may not have the strength to hold the hose in place. They seem to have a tough time holding tension especially when they have been removed and reinstalled. In the interests of a thorough overhaul we recommend replacing these 328 water hoses during this job (see diagram):

There are other hoses too but they are not often replaced during a radiator swap (radiator vent hose and heater core hose) and they don't see much wear. We offer these as well if you want a complete set (see Additional Items at the bottom of the page).

Expansion Tank Options

The expansion tank on the 328 is not prone to failures (unlike previous 3-series cars) so a new one is not strictly required. There aren't many seams or stress points for it to crack and we haven't heard of too many issues. But we wanted to offer it as part of a complete overhaul in case you want to cover everything. Simiarly, the level sensor is not required unless you're getting erroneous 'low coolant' warnings from the dash/iDrive. We do strongly recommend replacing the cap because that is designed to be the weak point in the system. The cap is what regulates the pressure inside the system and it should be replaced every few years anyway.

This cooling overhaul will cover just about everything you could replace on the 328's cooling system. We start with the basic water pump and thermostat bundle. These are already vital to the health and durability of the N52 328i. But to properly maintain these cars for the long term, the rest of the cooling system must be refreshed and preventatively replaced. Here you can add a radiator, expansion tank, all of the 328 cooling hoses, and the BMW antifreeze. This package fits 328i/328xi with N52 engine and automatic transmission. Some of the components are different for the automatic models because of the auto transmission oil cooler.

The sophisticated electronics of the ECU and water pump means catastrophic overheating should be a thing of the past. But the downside is that the electronics can shut down without any warning or symptoms. And troubleshooting is equally frustrating since the water pump electronics are not readable or serviceable. There are several clues to a faulty thermostat or water pump - the fan runs at full speed all the time (even immediately on a cold start), pending (soft) fault code for low coolant flow, or the water pump can be heard running constantly. But when the pump fails it's an immediate shut down of the engine which can be a major inconvenience and lead to additional repairs that might have been avoided with preventative maintance. We recommend a full cooling system overhaul on the E90/E92 every 80-90,000 miles and to check for soft/pending codes at every 5,000 mile service .

The water pump on the N52 engine has more cooling responsibilities than ever before. The good news is that the pump only works when, and only as much, as it needs to. That means the system can actually stop the pump when it doesn't need to be running. The bad news is that it's now an electrical part, so a failure is usually immediate and with no warning. The preventative replacement is your only insurance from a very inconvenient and costly breakdown in the future. Plus you get the very latest BMW water pump design with any improvements they've made since your original pump was installed.

Cooling Hoses

With regular driving the hoses should last a very long time. Even the plastic connectors seem to be holding up well. But as a preventative measure new hoses are recommended. We have also seen issues with re-using hoses as the spring connectors get weak over time and may not have the strength to hold the hose in place. They seem to have a tough time holding tension especially when they have been removed and reinstalled. In the interests of a thorough overhaul we recommend replacing these 328 water hoses during this job (see diagram):

There are other hoses too but they are not often replaced during a radiator swap (radiator vent hose and heater core hose) and they don't see much wear. We offer these as well if you want a complete set (see Additional Items at the bottom of the page).

Expansion Tank Options

The expansion tank on the 328 is not prone to failures (unlike previous 3-series cars) so a new one is not strictly required. There aren't many seams or stress points for it to crack and we haven't heard of too many issues. But we wanted to offer it as part of a complete overhaul in case you want to cover everything. Simiarly, the level sensor is not required unless you're getting erroneous 'low coolant' warnings from the dash/iDrive. We do strongly recommend replacing the cap because that is designed to be the weak point in the system. The cap is what regulates the pressure inside the system and it should be replaced every few years anyway.

Coolant Temp Sensors

There are two coolant temp sensors on the 328 SULEV - in the lower radiator hose and in the cylinder head. Both feed coolant temps to the ECU to regulate the water pump and cooling fan. You should replace the one in the lower radiator hose because it's one of the main sources for coolant leaks, especially when the old sensor is re-used in a new hose. The sensor in the cylinder head is not as prone to leaks and it's easily accessible so you don't have to replace it right away. But we offer it with the package in case you want to have a complete cooling system overahul.

Our approach to servicing and caring for newer BMW models is not radically different than when we opened nearly twenty years ago. The design and materials of some components have changed but that only affects WHEN you should replace something, not IF. Our Stage 1 kit features a sealed cold-air intake kit and performance software for a staggering increase in power and torque. This premium package is offered with the aFe Sealed Intake (SI) kit and Cobb AccessPort tuner. The larger surface area of the filters allows more air to enter the engine - creating more power and torque, a richer engine sound, and better throttle response. While the new intake plenum box completely seals out the filter from underhood temperatures. The kit is supplied complete with an aFe Pro5R filter, airbox, intake tube, sealing materials, hardware, and install instructions. The torque increase from low-mid RPM is sensational.

We have paired the aFe SI with the Cobb AccessPort performance software. The Cobb software tool puts multiple tuning stages in the palm of your hand. Our Stage 1 Performance Package is aligned with the Cobb Stage 1 tuning map. Simply plug it in, select the Stage 1 map with your octane preference, and install. Select different maps for other upgrades, throttle settings, octane ratings, valet mode, or revert back to stock! If you're moving up in Stages simply download a new file from the Cobb website and update your AccessPort programmer! The AccessPort triples as a diagnostic tester/reader and a data logger. It's the most feature-packed programmer on the market today.

We have taken the guesswork out of choosing the best upgrades for the N54 engine. If you follow the upgrade path we have laid out you will have very satisfying and reliable results. This Stage 1 package is a great 'bang for the buck' upgrade - this power kit makes more power and torque at every RPM and makes a great sound every time you dip into the throttle.
