The upper strut mount provides a locating point for the top of the front struts. It contains a rubber-isolated bearing that allows the strut shaft to move independently from the rest of the suspension - a critical component for the suspension to be quiet and effective. When replacing your shocks, it is always best to replace the shock mounts. This helps prevent excessive road noise and vibrations from the suspension and keeps anything from knocking or rattling. This is the top of the mount that threads onto the shock.
