The M5 is a special car in BMW's line-up and it takes special attention to maintain its lofty output. Looking after the M5's various needs and problem areas will reward you with a better M ownership experience and make your car stand out from less cared-for cars if/when it's time to sell. In addition to the normal maintenance items listed below, you may also want to check or replace the following:
+ fuel pump (especially if the car is hard to start or stumbles in the RPM range)
+ front (pre-cat) oxygen sensors
+ check valve cover gaskets, intake plenum seals, vacuum lines, and hoses for leaks
+ service or replace crankcase vent valve/oil separator system
+ VAN0S solenoid rebuild or replacement
+ have an engine oil analysis done annually. This will make it easier to spot internal engine wear, including rod bearing wear, as well as head gasket failure and coolant loss.
