BMW Cooling System Parts & Accessories for BMW 3 Series E30 (1984-1991)

The cooling system is arguably the weakest point in numerous BMWs. If you drive an aging BMW or plan on taking your car to the track like we do, we recommend beefing up your cooling system before going to the track. Generally, the main components in your cooling system that are prone to failure include the following: expansion tank, factory hoses, water pump, thermostat, fan (especially if your vehicle comes factory with a clutch fan), and radiator. Factory BMW expansion tanks are plastic and prone to either breaking off at connection points or combusting. As factory rubber hoses age they either crack or break over time - we offer silicone cooling hose upgrades for most applications to avoid future failures. If you have an older vehicle, your water pump likely comes from the factory with a plastic impeller - we offer upgraded water pumps with metal impellers that are far more reliable. Newer model BMWs utilize electric water pumps - BMW spent millions of dollars engineering these water pumps, but they fail so often that we recommend replacing at 60,000 mile service intervals to avoid being stranded on the side of the road. In terms of thermostats, we offer various upgraded thermostats for racing applications. If your BMW utilizes a clutch fan from the factory, we have several options available in terms of universal electric fans - we recommend replacing these to avoid sending brittle plastic fan blades through your hood. For radiators, we recommend swapping out your radiator for one that does not use plastic connection points like your factory radiator.

This Cooling Kit for the 1987 E30 325i covers all of the major replacement parts for the original cooling system. We start with an OEM Behr radiator and then you choose the additional parts you need to replace next. Add hoses, sensors, water pumps, thermostats, gaskets, hose clamps, and more. We also sell the correct Original BMW antifreeze to finish off the job.

Of the systems in your E30, the cooling system is not where you want to let slide or skip maintenance. Almost nothing will ruin your day more than an overheating engine and it's usually at the absolute worse time. Maintaining the cooling system is easy and you can do most or all of the work yourself with ordinary tools. There's no reason not to address a leaky or out of date cooling system right away.

Top Turner Tip!
On the 1987 325i, pay particular attention to the alternator fan blades and the clearance to the lower radiator hose. As the engine shifts on worn motor mounts, and the alternator twists on worn bushings, the cooling blades can slice right through the hose. Replace the alternator bushings and use our motor mount reinforcements. Or convert the whole system to the 1988+ cooling system which moves the lower hose to the other side of the radiator.

To save you time and money, we recommend replacing major components with related parts.
Radiator (manual: #17111468074; automatic: #17111468075)
Upper (#11531286914) and lower (#11531279895) hoses to thermostat.
Thermostat with o-ring and housing gasket (#11531713040).
Water pump (#11519071562)
Timing belt and tensioner (#09-9320-000).
Associated hoses with each of the above.

- hose from expansion tank to water pump (#11531289257)
- hose from throttle body to thermostat (#13541705568)
V-belts with any of the above.

Replacing the fan clutch on most BMW models requires holding the water pump pulley while removing the fan clutch lock nut. With less than 1 1/2" clearance on some models this project can easily turn into a mechanical nightmare.
