The S58 engine is BMW’s latest twin-turbocharged powerhouse—a genuine S-series motor that checks all the boxes: massive top-end power, instant torque, and a raw induction tone that deserves to be heard. Unfortunately, this masterpiece is muted by a restrictive intake system designed to meet NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) regulations. The result? During testing, ECS engineers identified multiple drawbacks in the stock setup. The factory intake features a catacomb-like airbox design with excessive internal baffling and sound-deadening resonators. Hidden inside are eight restrictive panel filters that severely limit available airflow. While the insulation helps with cabin quietness, it also silences the engine’s mechanical soundtrack and holds back the S58’s full potential.
